New Haven Baptist Church was born out of a burden for a New Testament Church which would be sound in doctrine and separated from the world. A group of nine believers met for prayer and Scripture reading on Wednesday, March 7, 1973, in the home of John Alver and Daisy B. Hinson of Landis, NC. After several such meetings, the group agreed to contact Tabernacle Bible College in Greenville, SC for graduates to preach. In the months that followed, several of the graduates preached to the group. During this time, the body of believers relocated to the home of Joe and Dot Echerd in Granite Quarry, NC. They continued to meet there until January 1975, when they rented a house on Peach Orchard Rd in Salisbury, NC.
In August 1974, the group voted Al Hinson to become pastor. In December of 1973, they formally organized as "New Haven Baptist Church," and a membership was established. There were thirteen charter members at that time. The charter was left open through May of 1974, closing with seventeen charter members.
On March 23,1975, Pastor Hinson went to be with the Lord. The church asked John Albright to be responsible for contacting prospective pastors. In seeking the leadership of the Holy Spirit tor selecting a pastor, the church agreed to claim Jeremiah 3:15, "And l will give you pastors according to mine own heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding."
John Albright obtained a list of graduates from Piedmont Bible College (now Piedmont Baptist College). After hearing several preachers from the list, Brother Albright called Franklin Delmar Johnson, whose name was on the list of graduates. After three weeks, the church issued a call to Brother Johnson to accept the Pastorate. At his request, the church prayed another week for the Lord to reveal if he was the pastor which God had chosen for New Haven. Brother Johnson also suggested the church seek to determine if the church and the prospective pastor were in scriptural harmony. On June 15, 1975, Brother Johnson was elected by unanimous vote to be pastor of New Haven Baptist Church. The church had a membership of eighteen at this time.
With the addition of Pastor Johnson, his wife (Annie Mae), and four of his six children added to the roll, the membership began to grow. The need for a larger building became necessary after attendance in the house increased to sixty and sometimes more. On May 15, 1976, New Haven moved from Peach Orchard Rd and relocated to the American Legion building in Landis, NC.
ln January 1976, the church purchased 14 1/2 acres of land on NC HWY 152, about four miles east of China Grove, NC. The foundation of the present church building was poured on May 27,1977. The first service in the new building was held on Sunday, September 18, 1977. 125 people attended that first service of dedication. Six weeks later, on Sunday, October 30, 1977, the new auditorium had been added and the first service was held in it. Continued growth resulted in the purchase of a modular unit for additional Sunday School rooms in May 1981. "The Lord hath done great things for us: whereof we are glad." (Psalms 126:31).
The Lord has called several men from New Haven to serve as ministers of Christ. John Albright attended Tabernacle Bible College in Greenville, SC, and then pastored Emmanuel Baptist church of the Madison-Mayodan area of NC. Steve Holshouser attended Piedmont Bible College, and now pastors Calvary Baptist Tabernacle in Salisbury, NC. Matt Farthing attended Carolina Bible College and is now our Youth Pastor.
